Recognise the quote from The Godfather?

In this post from Seth Godin, we are told to embrace the potentialities of the web, but be aware of the pitfalls too. I agree with Seth most of the time and do here. Most of my work to date has specialised in the promotion of the education sector to students, where this message doesn't seem to get through. Missed opportunities galore...

Most education marketers are savvy enough to know that the web presents them with even more chance to connect and engage with potential students, agents and partner institutions. But usually these ideas (chat rooms, forums, user generated content such as course reviews etc) are shot down by the corporate IT guys or increasingly an aversion to risk out of all proportion to the threat.

What I'd like to see is a healthier and more informed attitude to online opportunities in the education sector. After all, in this more competitive environment, if you don't offer engagement your competitors will. Transparency is with us to stay.

It's not been my experience that recruitment managers are risk averse (certainly not in my own institution), it is usually the IT dept that reinforces policy and also has no time to build and support the kind of functionality you're talking about. I've found it incredibly frustrating that this channel is never utilised to its potential. Of course what I'd like to see is some practical advice on how social networking can be used to recruit in a real life environment.
